Originaire d'Amérique du Sud, le cobaye domestique, baptisé cochon d'Inde en France, descend probablement du cobaye sauvage qui vit sur les hauts plateaux herbeux de la Cordillère des Andes. Son nom latin est Cavia aperea porcellus. Le nom français du cochon d'Inde s'explique en partie par l'origine supposée du nom anglais guinea pig, qui découlerait du mot guiana.
